The Struggles of the Offensive Line

So the Bears finally have a dangerous downfield passer in Jay Cutler, and they cannot protect him long enough to get the ball deep. The offensive line has allowed 19 sacks of Cutler, not to mention the numerous instances where he has been hit or hurried, and generally had to wing plays because of blown assignments. This would be a manageable hurdle if it were not for the fact that the offensive line is blowing their assignments on running plays as well. As athletic a running back as Matt Forte is he can only create so much yardage off of stiff-arms and side-steps. He needs to have a hole to hit, and that simply has not existed. Apparently, my point is not lost on the Bears coaching staff, who benched the poor-performing Omiyale in favor of Beekman. But that is not enough. What more needs to be done is what puzzles me. Lovie Smith is a good enough coach for me to believe that this is not the effects of a poorly run training camp. So what now? I don't know. These are professionals who by this point in their careers surely (should) know what the heck they are doing on the football field. It is a simple, but not easy task. Push guys around better than they push back. Hopefully, this week against San Fransisco will result in a win because this precise issue has been addressed and improved. Hopefully.
