Bears Seeking Redemption Against Falcons

Current Bronco quarterback, Kyle Orton, connected with Rasheed Davis for a touchdown that gave the Bears a one point lead (20-19) with merely 11 seconds remaining. However, in one of many disappointing games last year, the Bears were not able to seal the deal. The Falcons were able to move the ball inside Bear territory due to a combination of a poor kick-off and simply bad defensive execution. Jason Elam would nail a 48-yard field goal to send the dejected Bears home as losers in a game they should have won. So needless to say, the Bears are looking for a little redemption.

While the Bears were resting up, the Falcons are coming off one of their most impressive games of the young season in a 45-10 thrashing of the 49ers ending San Francisco’s five-game home winning streak. Second-year quarterback Matt Ryan completed 22 of 32 passes for 329 yards to go with 2 touchdowns. Roddy White had a field day against the San Francisco secondary catching eight passes for 210 yards. If the Bears are to avenge their loss from last year, they will need to do a better job of not giving up the big pass plays as they have in the first half of three of the four games this season. The team’s pass rush is much better than last year as they have already accumulated 14 sacks after totaling only 28 for the entire 2008 season. The secondary as well as the running game are both still a work in progress but both variables will have to be dominant in order for the Bears to continue being successful. As Olin Kreutz put stated “the offense needs to be able to run the ball even when the defense knows it’s coming.”

This game should be an interesting match up and with Cutler and Ryan under center, it will probably be a high-scoring game as both offenses have shown they can be explosive at times. Hopefully the Bears have learned from the numerous mistakes that plagued them in last season’s meeting and will come out as winners as they should have done last year. Pick: Bears 31, Falcons 27
